SUMMARY:Use Color to Conjure Mood One-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 20th from 10AM-5PM. Part of the Plein Air Art Festival. \nLearn how to utilize color harmonies to create mood in your plein air paintings with artist Catherine Bickford. \nMystery is one of the most important aspects of any painting and color is often the easiest way to create it. Color can translate your areas of interest to the viewer directly. It is common to make the mistake of painting right over the best color compositions in an effort to “finish” the painting. In this class we will slow down\, stay loose\, and use color with intention and to create dramatic results. \nColor mixing is an enjoyable process and a skill that requires practice. In this class we will learn how to use six basic colors (Cadmium Red\, Quinacidrone Magenta\, Cadmium Yellow Medium\, Cadmium Yellow Light\, Phthalo Blue\, Ultramarine Blue and Titanium White) to create almost any color. \nThe focus will be on learning complementary and harmonious color schemes. Mystery is the most important aspect of any painting and color is often the easiest waya to create it. Color can translate your areas of interest to the viewer directly and we often paint right over the best color compositions. In this class we will slow down and use color with more intention and to more dramatic result. \nPlease bring your materials\, as well as your easel set up for painting outside. If you do not have the materials from the list below\, just bring what you have. If you prefer to work with oil\, that is fine\, too. I personally work with an acrylic ground and oil on top. \nMeet at Artascope Studios in Yarmouth at 9:45AM \nThere will be a lunch break from 1pm-2pm. You can bring your own lunch or check out one of the local restaurants in Yarmouth. \nWorkshop fee: $149.\n \n  \n  \n\nMaterials List:\nHeavy Body Acrylic Paint Tubes (“Basics” Brand by Liquitex) \nTitanium White \nUltramarine Blue \nCadmium Yellow Medium \nCadmium Red Medium \nCadmium Yellow Light \nQuinacridone Magenta \nPhthalocyanine “Phthalo” Blue \nYou will need a medium to large jar of Acrylic Paint Medium in a Matte Finish \nGray Scale & Value Finder (The Color Wheel Company) \nColor Wheel \nPaper Towels \nCanvases 9 x 12 or larger is the best for this class. \nVine Charcoal for drawing on canvas. It’s VERY important that you purchase VINE CHARCOAL\, it’s softer and easier to erase than regular charcoal. \nMetal Palette knife \nStrathmore Palette Paper Pad to mix paint on 12″x16” (Big size is better for color mixing) \nBrushes (2 or 3 of each size) \nFlat Brush 1/2″ or larger (for Acrylic Paint) \nBright 1/2″ or larger (for Acrylic Paint) \nFlat Brush 1/4″ (for Acrylic Paint) \nSmall Round Size 4 or Smaller (for Acrylic Paint) \nHere are a few physical stores in our area (Ask for Student Discount 10% off): \nArtist & Craftsmen: 540 Deering Avenue\, Ptld\, ME \nArt Mart: 517 Congress Street\, Portland\, ME \nMichaels: 490 Payne Road\, Scarborough\, ME \nOnline Stores Include: \nDick Blick www.dickblick.com \nCheap Joes www.cheapjoes.com \n\nAbout the instructor: Catherine Bickford

SUMMARY:Beginner Plein Air Watercolor One-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 21st from 9AM-4PM. Part of the Plein Air Art Festival. \nBeginners Plein Air Watercolor (or a refresher for those who have not painted outside) \nSpend a day demystifying plein air watercolor painting. Learn to capture our beautiful landscape simply and effectively using watercolors. \nThe class will meet first at the Bickford Outdoor Pavilion at 1 Railroad Square (just off Main St)\, and then journey as a group to the Yarmouth Boat Landing at 209 Old Shipyard Road\, Yarmouth\, ME. (NOTE: Parking is on the right hand side at the boat landing. No single car parking right in front of the waterfront.) \nStudents will begin with compositional sketches and receive basic pointers for developing an engaging landscape composition. The group will spend about 40 minutes on basic watercolor techniques and brush handling. This will be followed by a demonstration of a three-layer landscape painting. \nStudents will paint along in order to learn the simple three-layer method for plein air painting. If time allows\, students can complete another three-layer painting\, or they can add finishing touches to their paint-along piece. \nIn the afternoon\, students will create their own watercolor painting using the three-layer method. There will be plenty of help and individual attention. We will end the workshop with a supportive group critique. \nALL STUDENTS must bring a sketch book\, drawing pencil and black sharpies. \nPlease bring your lunch to eat on site. \n(Rain date of Aug. 22nd) \n$149 workshop fee does not include materials. Students can choose to pay a $25 supply fee to the instructor the morning of the workshop if they do not have supplies of their own. \nPlease notify the instructor at deenaball@mac.com if you require watercolor supplies. \nInfo for new-to-watercolor students: \nAll you need to bring is a folding chair\, water for painting\, a container for the water\, paper towels\, a sketchbook\, a pencil\, a fine line Sharpie pen\, and any other outdoor necessities. \nThe instructor will supply professional-quality paints\, palettes\, brushes\, and paper. \nThere is a supply fee of $25.00. \nInfo for students who have taken a previous class with Deena: \nStudents who took Joy of Watercolor this year and have the required supplies can bring their own and will not need to pay the supply fee. \nIf you have supplies because you took watercolor with another instructor please make sure they are what is specified – www.deenasballworkshops.com – free favorite supply download. \n \n  \n  \n\nAbout the instructor: Deena S.
