SUMMARY:Signet Ring Wax Carving Two-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn the ancient technique of wax carving in this two-day workshop. \nIn the first class on Sunday\, March 9th from 9AM-4PM\, you will design\, lay out\, and carve a signet ring out of wax in your choice of several shapes. We will meet three weeks later on Sunday\, March 30th from 9AM-NOON for you to clean up and finish your ring after it is cast in either silver or brass. Basic wax carving\, tool use\, and finishing techniques will be covered. The casting process will occur off-site during the three weeks between classes. No prior metalsmithing experience necessary. \n$149 workshop fee does not include materials. Supply kit available from instructor for $40 on first workshop day. (For safety\, be sure to wear closed toe shoes and have long hair pulled back with clips or in a ponytail.) \nWe will have an hour break for lunch between Noon-1pm on the first workshop day. The studio will be closed during this break\, but there are nearby parks where you can eat lunch if you brought your own\, or you can check out one of the local restaurants in the area. \nOpen to adults only. Please contact us directly if you are interested in seeing metalsmithing options for teens. \n \n  \n  \n\nAbout the instructor: Carly has been working in the professional jewelry business for 13 years\, and started her company\, Flux Jewelry Studio in 2018. After learning the basics of fabrication and repair as a bench jeweler\, she spent an inspiring year in Florence\, Italy\, taking classes in gemology\, wax carving\, rendering\, and stone setting. Many of the unique engraved finishes and detail techniques Carly uses in her designs were passed down from the expert hands of jewelers working in the traditional Italian metalsmithing style. In her sunny Westbrook\, Maine studio\, Carly spends hours twisting fine wires\, forming small beads of metal\, and engraving each piece. SUMMARY:Intermediate Metalsmithing Guided Studio 6-week Artist Series
DESCRIPTION:Starts March 26th (Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for six weeks). \nThis class is an opportunity to bring your specific interests to the bench and receive help in creating the jewelry that YOU want to make. Students should feel comfortable working mostly independently with occasional guidance. Instructor will provide demos of techniques related to your projects as needed. She will not provide instruction for a specific project\, so be prepared to come to class with your own ideas. \nMetal and components will be available and charged for as needed\, but feel free to bring your own materials to start\, especially for the first class so you can hit the ground running. Take the skills you already have to a new level by designing and creating your own pieces\, with support in bringing them to life! \nPlease note: It is important that students have basic metalsmithing knowledge\, either through the beginner 6-week metalsmithing course at Artascope or a comparable class. \nNon-members: $250 for 6 weeks. Members: $200. \nFee does not include materials. $10 materials fee covers communal tools\, additional materials can be purchased as needed. \nOpen to adults only. \n \n  \n  \n\nAbout the instructor: Carly Cooke has been a full-time bench jeweler since 2012\, and started her business\, Flux Jewelry Studio in 2018.
