SUMMARY:Exploring Florals with Watercolor One-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, July 26th from 9:00AM-4:00PM \nLearn to create paintings inspired by flowers and nature. We will work with cut flowers and learn how to draw and compose our pieces. Then we will explore how different watercolor techniques\, such as color mixing\, wet on wet\, wet on dry\, glazing and detail work\, can be used to bring them to life. Beginners welcome! \n$99 workshop fee does not include materials. There is a materials fee of $15 or you can bring your own watercolor supplies. \nWe will have an hour break for lunch midday. The studio will be closed during this break\, but there are nearby parks where you can eat lunch if you brought your own\, or you can check out one of the local restaurants in the area. \n \n  \n  \n\nAbout the instructor: Audrey Robidoux is an artist and art teacher residing in Portland\, Maine. She graduated from Maine College of Art & Design in 2021 with a Masters in Art Education\, as well as in 2019 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Painting and a minor in Art History. She chooses to work in the medium of watercolor as a nod to botanical illustrations\, and due to the technical challenge of it\, the puzzle involved to create such a complex piece with layers and fine detail.

We will cover the following topics: Composition\, Value\, Design\, Choosing a Motif\, Identifying and mixing accurate Warm and Cool Colors\, Establishing a Focal Point as well as Tips and Do’s and Don’ts for the Landscape Painter to consider. \nThe workshop will be complete with informal lectures\, instructor demos. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday through Saturday\, 10:00AM-5:00PM (August 18-22). Part of the Plein Air Art Festival. \n\n\nLearn the basics of strong landscape painting while utilizing collage as an exciting tool to see and construct inuitive\, personal paintings. This innovative workshop will be team taught by Liam Murphy-Torres and Francie Cook\, both recent MFA graduates of the New York Studio School. \nMorning sessions run 10am-1pm and afternoon sessions run 2pm-5pm. \nLandscape Laboratory is a week-long workshop exploring the Maine landscape through a combination of plein air painting and collage. Looking closely at the work of the Impressionists\, primarily Cézanne and Matisse\, alongside Lois Dodd and Fairfield Porter\, two painters whose work was deeply informed by the landscape of Maine\, we will examine how artists have approached direct observation and consider what their discoveries can offer our own practices. \nThe mornings\, taught by Liam Murphy-Torres\, will focus on painting from direct observation. Working outdoors among Maine’s land and sea\, participants will develop strategies for seeing and responding to a motif while strengthening their ability to convey space\, light\, atmosphere\, and form. Through sustained observation\, we will build a deeper understanding of structure and the visual relationships that give a painting its strength. \nIn the afternoons\, taught by Francie Cook\, participants will shift from painting to collage. Using the morning’s paintings as source material\, collage becomes a tool for simplification\, experimentation\, and invention. Participants will work on small\, fast collages\, rather than large works. Using collage as a means to explore new compositions\, edit observations\, and discover unexpected possibilities through cutting\, layering\, and rearranging forms. \nTogether\, painting and collage create a highly generative process. The paintings inform the collages\, and the collages\, in turn\, become studies for future paintings. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of plein air painting\, a body of work developed throughout the week\, and a collection of collage studies and ideas to carry back into their studio practice. \nSee a detailed materials list below the artist bio. \nThere will be a lunch break from 1:00pm-2:00pm. SUMMARY:Bezel Earrings One-Day Metalsmithing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 30th from 9:30a.m. to 4:30p.m. \nMake your new favorite pair of earrings in this Mixed Metals earrings class. \n\n\n\nYou will learn how to use a jewelers torch\, saw through sheet metal\, create handmade bezel cups with bezel wire\, create handmade ear wires\, and use various dremel attachments for sanding and finishing metal. Beginners welcome! \nMetals we will be using to make one pair of earrings: \n\nCopper Sheet Metal\nBrass Sheet Metal\nSterling Silver Bezel Cups\nSterling Silver Ear Wire\nSterling Silver Jump Rings\n\n$99 workshop fee does not include materials. \nThe materials fee is $55\, which includes stones and metal options to make one pair of earrings. This separate fee is paid to the instructor via Venmo\, CASH\, or credit card. \n(For safety\, be sure to wear closed toe shoes and have long hair pulled back with clips or in a ponytail.) \nWe will have an hour break for lunch . SUMMARY:Sculptural Vessels in Clay - Saturday 3-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this 3-day ceramics Saturday workshop (Sept. 19th and Sept. 26th from 2PM-5:30PM\, and October 10th from 2PM-4PM). \nNOTE: As of 6/30/26\, this workshop was rescheduled to start in September. \nBuilding with coils of clay is a very accessible and versatile technique that can be used to create larger pieces\, asymmetrical\, very organic or sculptural. Unlike working with the wheel\, a successful coil piece can be easier to create with little experience. All levels are welcome! \nFIRST DAY – Saturday\, September 19th from 2PM-5:30PM (3.5 hours) \nWe will look at examples of coil work for inspiration before a demonstration of the actual technique using simple tools. You can have an rough idea of what you’d like to do or just start and see what develops. Done correctly\, one can create a large piece by gradually building it coil by coil\, joining the coils together by hand and then smoothing the surface with a special flexible tool that can stretch and direct the development of the shape. Each stage needs to be done with care so the base can support the next stage. Any work that is unfinished can be wrapped properly so it can be finished on the following Saturday. \nSECOND DAY – Saturday\, September 26th from 2PM-5:30PM (3.5 hours) \nContinue working to finish the project. If you are finished\, feel free to explore techniques in another piece such as leaving some coils showing or combining multiple coil sections together\, adding texture or decoration to the surface. It is important to let the pieces dry slowly and thoroughly before the bisque fire. \nTHIRD DAY – Saturday\, October 10th from 2PM-4PM (2 hours) \nAfter your piece has been bisque fired you will glaze it to be fired a second time. NOTE: you will need to return to pick up the finished glazed piece at a later date to be determined. \n$149 workshop fee (9 hours total) does not include materials. Clay is sold by the pound and can be purchased from the instructor at the beginning of the workshop. \n \n  \n  \n\nInstructor: Paula Wolfe taught high school pottery for many years in Massachusetts before teaching jewelry. She is now revisiting her love of hand building and is especially interested in containers for plants and flower arranging\, a new passion.
