After learning the basics of fabrication and repair as a bench jeweler\, she spent an inspiring year in Florence\, Italy\, taking classes in gemology\, wax carving\, rendering\, and stone setting. Many of the unique engraved finishes and detail techniques Carly uses in her designs were passed down from the expert hands of jewelers working in the traditional Italian metalsmithing style. In her sunny Westbrook\, Maine studio\, Carly spends hours twisting fine wires\, forming small beads of metal\, and engraving each piece. Old world techniques\, antique design inspiration\, and a fresh take on classic concepts are Flux specialties. \n  \nClick here to view our cancellation policy.

SUMMARY:Intermediate Metalsmithing Wednesday 6-week Artist Series
DESCRIPTION:CLASS IS FULL. \nStarts May 20th (Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for six weeks). \nClass dates: 5/20; 5/27; 6/3; 6/10; 6/17; and 6/24. \nBuilding upon foundational metalsmithing techniques\, this class will elevate your existing skills and inspire you to tackle more advanced jewelry projects. We will cover bezel setting for faceted gemstones\, saw piercing\, soldering techniques\, and finishing. Students will move through assigned projects\, including a pair of sterling silver “diamond” earrings (or two pendants)\, but there will be plenty of room for design creativity. Be prepared to learn tips and tricks that will advance your jewelry making to the next level! \nPlease note: It is important that students have basic metalsmithing knowledge\, either through the beginner 6-week metalsmithing course at Artascope or a comparable class. \nNon-members: $250 for 6 weeks. Members: $200. \nOpen to adults only. \nSeries fee does not include materials. Supply kit is available from the instructor for an estimated $35* when series begins. Additional supplies are available to purchase separately as needed for class projects. \n*NOTE: Due to daily increases in the cost of metal\, the cost of materials is subject to change. \n \n  \n  \n\nAbout the instructor: Carly has been working in the professional jewelry business for 13 years\, and started her company\, Flux Jewelry Studio in 2018.

SUMMARY:Wax Carving Gemstone Ring - Two-Day Metalsmithing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this 2-day workshop\, learn how to carve a ring from wax and how to create a bezel cup to add a gemstone. \n\n\n\nCreate a wax carved gemstone ring\, which will be sent out to be cast in Bronze or Brass* after the first workshop day of June 21st. You will finish the ring on the second workshop day of August 2nd by adding a bezel cup and setting the gemstone. \n*You will have a choice of bronze or brass for the cast ring–see kit options under the description. The materials kit fee must be paid to the instructor on the first workshop day via Venmo\, CASH\, or credit card. \nVERY IMPORTANT! Due to the high cost of silver from the metals market fluctuation in 2026\, if you want to have your ring in sterling silver it is imperative to carve out the majority of the bulk from the backside of the ring to reduce costs\, or make a smaller and less heavy ring. If you want to make a huge piece\, you must be willing and able to prepay the instructor before she sends them out to the caster. \nDAY ONE – June 21st from 9:30AM-4:30PM \nIn the first class\, students will learn to carve a ring from wax and quickly get to work. Once our design is finished at the end of class we will send the rings out to a caster and then receive them in time for the second class. \nStudents will choose one gemstone to set in the ring. PLEASE BRING A SKETCHBOOK AND PENCIL. \nDAY TWO – August 2nd from 9:30AM-4:30PM \nIn the second class\, you will learn how to clean up a casting in metal\, measure a stone for creating a bezel cup\, solder sterling silver bezel cup to your ring\, learn the steps of filing\, sanding and polishing your ring\, and then set your stone. \n$199 workshop fee does not include materials. Students can choose to make a bronze or brass ring for an estimated* materials cost of $55 each OR $80-$140 materials cost per ring for sterling silver. Kit includes: Jewelers Carving Wax\, Gemstone\, Casting Labor Fee & the cost of the Metal. \n*NOTE: This is an approximate cost and actual kit cost may be different due to the metals market fluctuation in 2026. \nThe materials kit must be purchased from the instructor on the first workshop day via Venmo\, CASH\, or credit card. \n(For safety\, be sure to wear closed toe shoes and have long hair pulled back with clips or in a ponytail.) \nWe will have an hour break for lunch on both days. The studio will be closed during this break\, but there are nearby parks where you can eat lunch if you brought your own\, or you can check out one of the local restaurants in the area. \nOpen to adults only. \n \n  \n  \n\nAbout the instructor: Olivia Boi creates jewelry at her home and metals studio in Maine. Sterling silver\, brass\, and beautifully cut stones are the bread and butter to her practice. She started Strong Moon Metals December 2017 and hasn’t looked back ever since. SUMMARY:Sculptural Vessels in Clay - Saturday 3-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this 3-day ceramics Saturday workshop (July 11th and July 18th from 2:00PM-5:30PM\, and August 1st from 2:00PM-4:00PM). \nBuilding with coils of clay is a very accessible and versatile technique that can be used to create larger pieces\, asymmetrical\, very organic or sculptural. Unlike working with the wheel\, a successful coil piece can be easier to create with little experience. All levels are welcome! \nFIRST DAY – Saturday\, July 11th from 2PM-5:30PM (3.5 hours) \nWe will look at examples of coil work for inspiration before a demonstration of the actual technique using simple tools. You can have an rough idea of what you’d like to do or just start and see what develops. Done correctly\, one can create a large piece by gradually building it coil by coil\, joining the coils together by hand and then smoothing the surface with a special flexible tool that can stretch and direct the development of the shape. Each stage needs to be done with care so the base can support the next stage. Any work that is unfinished can be wrapped properly so it can be finished on the following Saturday. \nSECOND DAY – Saturday\, July 18th from 2PM-5:30PM (3.5 hours) \nContinue working to finish the project. If you are finished\, feel free to explore techniques in another piece such as leaving some coils showing or combining multiple coil sections together\, adding texture or decoration to the surface. It is important to let the pieces dry slowly and thoroughly before the bisque fire. \nTHIRD DAY – Saturday\, August 1st from 2PM-4PM (2 hours) \nAfter your piece has been bisque fired you will glaze it to be fired a second time. NOTE: you will need to return to pick up the finished glazed piece at a later date to be determined. \n$149 workshop fee (9 hours total) does not include materials. Clay is sold by the pound and can be purchased from the instructor at the beginning of the workshop. \n \n  \n  \n\nInstructor: Paula Wolfe taught high school pottery for many years in Massachusetts before teaching jewelry. She is now revisiting her love of hand building and is especially interested in containers for plants and flower arranging\, a new passion. She uses a special flexible tool to smooth and sculpt the surface of the piece after the coils have been joined. \n  \nClick here to view our cancellation policy.
