Students should feel comfortable ordering their own materials and working mostly independently with occasional guidance. The instructor will provide demos of techniques related to your projects\, but will not guide you through a specific project\, so be prepared to come to class with your own ideas. Take the skills you already have to a new level by designing and creating your own pieces\, with support in bringing them to life! \nMaterials are not included in the class price. Kit fee is $10 for communal tools\, solder\, etc. Additional materials can be purchased as needed. \nPlease note: It is important that students have basic metalsmithing knowledge\, either through the beginner 6-week metalsmithing course at Artascope or a comparable class. \n6-week Series Cost – Non-members: $300 for 6 weeks. Members: $240. \n6-week Series + Trial Membership* bundle: $350 (Non-members can use promo code 6WKTRIALMETALS when registering to reveal access to a 6-week Series + Trial Membership bundle. After learning the basics of fabrication and repair as a bench jeweler\, she spent an inspiring year in Florence\, Italy\, taking classes in gemology\, wax carving\, rendering\, and stone setting. Many of the unique engraved finishes and detail techniques Carly uses in her designs were passed down from the expert hands of jewelers working in the traditional Italian metalsmithing style. In her sunny Westbrook\, Maine studio\, Carly spends hours twisting fine wires\, forming small beads of metal\, and engraving each piece. Old world techniques\, antique design inspiration\, and a fresh take on classic concepts are Flux specialties. \nOpen to adults only. Please contact us directly if you are interested in seeing metalsmithing options for teens. \nClick here to view our cancellation policy.

SUMMARY:Sculptural Vessels in Clay - Saturday 3-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this 3-day ceramics Saturday workshop (November 7th and November 14th from 2PM-5:30PM\, and November 28th from 2PM-4PM). \nBuilding with coils of clay is a very accessible and versatile technique that can be used to create larger pieces\, asymmetrical\, very organic or sculptural. Unlike working with the wheel\, a successful coil piece can be easier to create with little experience. All levels are welcome! \nFIRST DAY – Saturday\, November 7th from 2PM-5:30PM (3.5 hours) \nWe will look at examples of coil work for inspiration before a demonstration of the actual technique using simple tools. You can have an rough idea of what you’d like to do or just start and see what develops. Done correctly\, one can create a large piece by gradually building it coil by coil\, joining the coils together by hand and then smoothing the surface with a special flexible tool that can stretch and direct the development of the shape. Each stage needs to be done with care so the base can support the next stage. Any work that is unfinished can be wrapped properly so it can be finished on the following Saturday. \nSECOND DAY – Saturday\, November 14th from 2PM-5:30PM (3.5 hours) \nContinue working to finish the project. If you are finished\, feel free to explore techniques in another piece such as leaving some coils showing or combining multiple coil sections together\, adding texture or decoration to the surface. It is important to let the pieces dry slowly and thoroughly before the bisque fire. \nTHIRD DAY – Saturday\, November 28th from 2PM-4PM (2 hours) \nAfter your piece has been bisque fired you will glaze it to be fired a second time. NOTE: you will need to return to pick up the finished glazed piece at a later date to be determined. \nWorkshop fee (9 hours total) does not include materials. Clay is sold by the pound and can be purchased from the instructor at the beginning of the workshop. \n9-hour Workshop Cost – Non-members: $175 / Members: $140 \n \n  \n  \n\nInstructor: Paula Wolfe taught high school pottery for many years in Massachusetts before teaching jewelry. She is now revisiting her love of hand building and is especially interested in containers for plants and flower arranging\, a new passion. She uses a special flexible tool to smooth and sculpt the surface of the piece after the coils have been joined. \n  \nClick here to view our cancellation policy.

SUMMARY:Watercolor Batik One-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 8th from 9:30AM-4:30PM \nBatik is a wax-resistant dyeing technique with a rich and extensive history\, tracing back thousands of years and originating in Java\, Indonesia. While batik on fabric is the most familiar and practiced art form\, a lesser known technique involves utilizing the batik practice with Japanese rice paper. \nGuided by multimedia artist Jeanne Lally\, students first create a small “practice” piece to familiarize themselves with the basic skills and materials. Next\, students will choose an image and then trace their designs onto rice paper\, alternating between applying wax and watercolor paint\, then finally removing the wax to reveal a rich\, luminous painting. No previous painting or batik experience is required. NOTE: This class can be messy; students are encouraged to wear play clothing or an apron. \nMaterials are not included in the class price. The $20 materials kit can be purchased from the instructor at the beginning of the workshop. \n6-hour workshop cost – Non-members: $125 / Members: $100 \n \n  \n  \nWe will have an hour break for lunch midday. The studio will be closed during this break\, but there are nearby parks where you can eat lunch if you brought your own\, or you can check out one of the local restaurants in the area. \n\nAbout the instructor: A lifelong multimedia artist\, Jeanne Lally has studied under various artists and delved into many art mediums throughout her life. She is most influenced by her mother\, Barbara Lally\, herself a self-taught and very accomplished artist. The list of art mediums they have both studied/produced is quite long\, including but not limited to enamel on copper\, watercolor\, oil painting\, pastel\, shibori\, rug hooking\, embroidery\, pysanky and batik. After learning watercolor batik on rice paper paper\, Jeanne has created many original paintings and also sells cards and prints of her work. You can view many of her paintings on Instagram @oceanartist8. \n  \nClick here to view our cancellation policy.
