SUMMARY:Signet Ring Wax Carving Two-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Signet Ring Wax Carving Two-day Workshop on October 25th (full-day) and November 15th (half-day). \n\n\n\nLearn the ancient technique of wax carving in this two-day workshop. In the first class on Sunday\, October 25th from 9AM-4PM\, you will design\, lay out\, and carve a signet ring out of wax in your choice of several shapes. We will meet three weeks later on Sunday\, November 15 from 9AM-NOON for you to clean up and finish your ring after it is cast in either silver or brass. Basic wax carving\, tool use\, and finishing techniques will be covered. The casting process will occur off-site during the three weeks between classes. No prior metalsmithing experience necessary. \n9-hour workshop cost does not include materials. Estimated kit fee* is $40-$80 depending on size of rings\, chosen material (brass or silver)\, and number of rings made. (For safety\, be sure to wear closed toe shoes and have long hair pulled back with clips or in a ponytail.) \n*NOTE: This is an approximate cost and actual kit cost may be different due to the metals market fluctuation in 2026. \n9-hour Workshop Cost – Non-members: $175 / Members: $140 \n\n \n  \n  \n\nWe will have an hour break for lunch between Noon-1pm on the first workshop day. The studio will be closed during this break\, but there are nearby parks where you can eat lunch if you brought your own\, or you can check out one of the local restaurants in the area. \nOpen to adults only. Please contact us directly if you are interested in seeing metalsmithing options for teens. \n\nAbout the instructor: Carly has been working in the professional jewelry business for 13 years\, and started her company\, Flux Jewelry Studio in 2018. After learning the basics of fabrication and repair as a bench jeweler\, she spent an inspiring year in Florence\, Italy\, taking classes in gemology\, wax carving\, rendering\, and stone setting. Many of the unique engraved finishes and detail techniques Carly uses in her designs were passed down from the expert hands of jewelers working in the traditional Italian metalsmithing style. In her sunny Westbrook\, Maine studio\, Carly spends hours twisting fine wires\, forming small beads of metal\, and engraving each piece. Old world techniques\, antique design inspiration\, and a fresh take on classic concepts are Flux specialties. \n  \nClick here to view our cancellation policy.

SUMMARY:Landscape as Laboratory (Aug. 18-22)
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday through Saturday\, 10:00AM-5:00PM (August 18-22). Part of the Plein Air Art Festival. \n\n\nLearn the basics of strong landscape painting while utilizing collage as an exciting tool to see and construct inuitive\, personal paintings. This innovative workshop will be team taught by Liam Murphy-Torres and Francie Cook\, both recent MFA graduates of the New York Studio School. \nMorning sessions run 10am-1pm and afternoon sessions run 2pm-5pm. \nLandscape Laboratory is a week-long workshop exploring the Maine landscape through a combination of plein air painting and collage. Looking closely at the work of the Impressionists\, primarily Cézanne and Matisse\, alongside Lois Dodd and Fairfield Porter\, two painters whose work was deeply informed by the landscape of Maine\, we will examine how artists have approached direct observation and consider what their discoveries can offer our own practices. \nThe mornings\, taught by Liam Murphy-Torres\, will focus on painting from direct observation. Working outdoors among Maine’s land and sea\, participants will develop strategies for seeing and responding to a motif while strengthening their ability to convey space\, light\, atmosphere\, and form. Through sustained observation\, we will build a deeper understanding of structure and the visual relationships that give a painting its strength. \nIn the afternoons\, taught by Francie Cook\, participants will shift from painting to collage. Using the morning’s paintings as source material\, collage becomes a tool for simplification\, experimentation\, and invention. Participants will work on small\, fast collages\, rather than large works. Using collage as a means to explore new compositions\, edit observations\, and discover unexpected possibilities through cutting\, layering\, and rearranging forms. \nTogether\, painting and collage create a highly generative process. The paintings inform the collages\, and the collages\, in turn\, become studies for future paintings. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of plein air painting\, a body of work developed throughout the week\, and a collection of collage studies and ideas to carry back into their studio practice. \nSee a detailed materials list below the artist bio. \nThere will be a lunch break from 1:00pm-2:00pm.
