SUMMARY:Beginner Plein Air Watercolor One-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 21st from 9AM-4PM. Part of the Plein Air Art Festival. \nBeginners Plein Air Watercolor (or a refresher for those who have not painted outside) \nSpend a day demystifying plein air watercolor painting. Learn to capture our beautiful landscape simply and effectively using watercolors. \nThe class will meet first at the Bickford Outdoor Pavilion at 1 Railroad Square (just off Main St)\, and then journey as a group to the Yarmouth Boat Landing at 209 Old Shipyard Road\, Yarmouth\, ME. (NOTE: Parking is on the right hand side at the boat landing. No single car parking right in front of the waterfront.) \nStudents will begin with compositional sketches and receive basic pointers for developing an engaging landscape composition. The group will spend about 40 minutes on basic watercolor techniques and brush handling. This will be followed by a demonstration of a three-layer landscape painting. \nStudents will paint along in order to learn the simple three-layer method for plein air painting. If time allows\, students can complete another three-layer painting\, or they can add finishing touches to their paint-along piece. \nIn the afternoon\, students will create their own watercolor painting using the three-layer method. There will be plenty of help and individual attention. We will end the workshop with a supportive group critique. \nALL STUDENTS must bring a sketch book\, drawing pencil and black sharpies. \nPlease bring your lunch to eat on site. \n(Rain date of Aug. 22nd) \n$149 workshop fee does not include materials. Students can choose to pay a $25 supply fee to the instructor the morning of the workshop if they do not have supplies of their own. \nPlease notify the instructor at deenaball@mac.com if you require watercolor supplies. \nInfo for new-to-watercolor students: \nAll you need to bring is a folding chair\, water for painting\, a container for the water\, paper towels\, a sketchbook\, a pencil\, a fine line Sharpie pen\, and any other outdoor necessities. \nThe instructor will supply professional-quality paints\, palettes\, brushes\, and paper. \nThere is a supply fee of $25.00. \nInfo for students who have taken a previous class with Deena: \nStudents who took Joy of Watercolor this year and have the required supplies can bring their own and will not need to pay the supply fee. \nIf you have supplies because you took watercolor with another instructor please make sure they are what is specified – www.deenasballworkshops.com – free favorite supply download. \n \n  \n  \n\nAbout the instructor: Deena S. SUMMARY:Joy of Watercolor 6-week Artist Series
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT\, but you can join a waitlist. \nStarts Monday\, March 18th (Mondays from 1:30PM-4:30PM for six weeks.) \nIMPORTANT INFO: Class dates will be 3/18; 4/1; 4/8; 4/22; with two classes scheduled for the final week–Monday\, April 29th and Thursday\, May 2nd). Both 3/25 and 4/15 will be skipped. \nEach week\, class will dive into one aspect of watercolor painting. Color\, water to pigment ratios\, composition\, brush strokes and value. In the beginning of each session\, students will complete several exercises on the daily topic\, and then move on to their individual painting project where they will focus on the skills we have just learned. Class is appropriate for all levels. \nMaterials not included. \nNon-members: $250 for 6 weeks. Members: $200. \nClick HERE for a PDF showing recommended basic supplies. \n\n\n \n  \n  \n\n\n\nADDITIONAL NOTE FROM DEENA: Students should purchase paper in a size they are comfortable painting on. You can purchase sheets of 140lb cold press all cotton watercolor paper. Arches\, Waterford Saunders\, Fabriano are all great brands. Three sheets should be plenty if you do not plan on painting many pieces over 11 x 14. If you do purchase sheets you will need some kind of support board and artist tape. White artist tape ( intertape) and gator board is suggested. Dick Blick Art Materials sells a 16” x 23” 1/2” thick gator board which is perfect. If you would prefer to purchase a block of watercolor paper you can and then you do not need tape or support however you will only be able to work on one thing at a time. To me this is a less economical and more restrictive way to buy paper. Watercolor blocks have more sizing on the paper than sheets of paper. \nClick HERE for a PDF showing Deena’s favorite watercolor materials. \n\nAbout the instructor: Deena S. Ball is a nationally renowned landscape painter known for her innovative use of watercolor in combination with a textured ground and specialized surfaces. She received her BA in Art history and Studio Art from Colby College in Waterville\, Maine\, and continued her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art and Tyler School of Art. Deena’s work is exhibited extensively throughout the Mid-Atlantic region\, and can be found in issues of Watercolor Artist and the annual publications of the watercolor book\, Splash. Deena’s work is primarily landscapes with many of her paintings done on location outside.
