SUMMARY:Landscape as Laboratory (Aug. 18-22)
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday through Saturday\, 10:00AM-5:00PM (August 18-22). Part of the Plein Air Art Festival. \n\n\nLearn the basics of strong landscape painting while utilizing collage as an exciting tool to see and construct inuitive\, personal paintings. This innovative workshop will be team taught by Liam Murphy-Torres and Francie Cook\, both recent MFA graduates of the New York Studio School. \nMorning sessions run 10am-1pm and afternoon sessions run 2pm-5pm. \nLandscape Laboratory is a week-long workshop exploring the Maine landscape through a combination of plein air painting and collage. Looking closely at the work of the Impressionists\, primarily Cézanne and Matisse\, alongside Lois Dodd and Fairfield Porter\, two painters whose work was deeply informed by the landscape of Maine\, we will examine how artists have approached direct observation and consider what their discoveries can offer our own practices. \nThe mornings\, taught by Liam Murphy-Torres\, will focus on painting from direct observation. Working outdoors among Maine’s land and sea\, participants will develop strategies for seeing and responding to a motif while strengthening their ability to convey space\, light\, atmosphere\, and form. Through sustained observation\, we will build a deeper understanding of structure and the visual relationships that give a painting its strength. \nIn the afternoons\, taught by Francie Cook\, participants will shift from painting to collage. Using the morning’s paintings as source material\, collage becomes a tool for simplification\, experimentation\, and invention. Participants will work on small\, fast collages\, rather than large works. Using collage as a means to explore new compositions\, edit observations\, and discover unexpected possibilities through cutting\, layering\, and rearranging forms. \nTogether\, painting and collage create a highly generative process. The paintings inform the collages\, and the collages\, in turn\, become studies for future paintings. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of plein air painting\, a body of work developed throughout the week\, and a collection of collage studies and ideas to carry back into their studio practice. \nSee a detailed materials list below the artist bio. \nThere will be a lunch break from 1:00pm-2:00pm. You can bring your own lunch or check out one of the local restaurants in Yarmouth. \n$750 workshop fee* does not include materials.\n\n \n  \n  \n\n\nAbout the instructors: \nLiam Murphy Torres is a MFA Graduate of New York Studio school. She was born in 1997 in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, is an emerging oil painter currently based in New York. She is best known for her intimate depictions of loved ones\, all drawn or painted from direct observation. Cook’s work is guided by materiality\, often incorporating elements of collage that work in tandem with paint\, ink\, and charcoal. Her practice is further characterized by a loose\, painterly application and a strong awareness of the geometric structure of the rectangle. Francie Cook has exhibited across the United States and Europe. She holds a BFA from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and has studied at the New York Studio School and the Art Students League of New York. SUMMARY:Watercolor Batik One-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 21st from 9:00AM-4:00PM \nNOTE: This workshop was originally listed to run 6/22/25\, but was rescheduled to 9/21/25. \nBatik is a wax-resistant dyeing technique with a rich and extensive history\, tracing back thousands of years and originating in Java\, Indonesia. While batik on fabric is the most familiar and practiced art form\, a lesser known technique involves utilizing the batik practice with Japanese rice paper. \nGuided by multimedia artist Jeanne Lally\, students first create a small “practice” piece to familiarize themselves with the basic skills and materials. Next\, students will choose an image and then trace their designs onto rice paper\, alternating between applying wax and watercolor paint\, then finally removing the wax to reveal a rich\, luminous painting. No previous painting or batik experience is required. \n$99 workshop fee does not include materials. The $20 materials kit can be purchased from the instructor at the beginning of the workshop. \nNOTE: This class can be messy; students are encouraged to wear play clothing or an apron. \nWe will have an hour break for lunch midday. The studio will be closed during this break\, but there are nearby parks where you can eat lunch if you brought your own\, or you can check out one of the local restaurants in the area. \n \n  \n  \n\nAbout the instructor: A lifelong multimedia artist\, Jeanne Lally has studied under various artists and delved into many art mediums throughout her life. She is most influenced by her mother\, Barbara Lally\, herself a self-taught and very accomplished artist. The list of art mediums they have both studied/produced is quite long\, including but not limited to enamel on copper\, watercolor\, oil painting\, pastel\, shibori\, rug hooking\, embroidery\, pysanky and batik. After learning watercolor batik on rice paper paper\, Jeanne has created many original paintings and also sells cards and prints of her work. You can view many of her paintings on Instagram @oceanartist8. \n  \nClick here to view our cancellation policy.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 20th from 10AM-5PM. Part of the Plein Air Art Festival. \nLearn how to utilize color harmonies to create mood in your plein air paintings with artist Catherine Bickford. \nMystery is one of the most important aspects of any painting and color is often the easiest way to create it. Color can translate your areas of interest to the viewer directly. It is common to make the mistake of painting right over the best color compositions in an effort to “finish” the painting. In this class we will slow down\, stay loose\, and use color with intention and to create dramatic results. \nColor mixing is an enjoyable process and a skill that requires practice. In this class we will learn how to use six basic colors (Cadmium Red\, Quinacidrone Magenta\, Cadmium Yellow Medium\, Cadmium Yellow Light\, Phthalo Blue\, Ultramarine Blue and Titanium White) to create almost any color. \nThe focus will be on learning complementary and harmonious color schemes. Mystery is the most important aspect of any painting and color is often the easiest waya to create it. Color can translate your areas of interest to the viewer directly and we often paint right over the best color compositions. In this class we will slow down and use color with more intention and to more dramatic result. \nPlease bring your materials\, as well as your easel set up for painting outside.
