Do you want to learn playful and visually appealing techniques that will help you communicate your artistic vision? This class will instruct you in the basics of expressionist painting techniques such as washes\, scumbling\, sgraffitto\, and adding texture. You will learn about the great expressionist painters such as Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky. And\, you will discover a wealth of new tools to improve your paintings through use of value\, color and composition. \nGreat for beginners who wish to learn the essentials of painting or for intermediate painters looking to break out of realism. \nNon-members: $250 for 6 weeks. Members: $200. \nFee does not include materials. DESCRIPTION:Starts Monday\, July 10th (Mondays from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for six weeks.) \nLearn the basics of how to draw from life using vine charcoal. This course is great for beginners or those who wish to improve their observational skills. We will focus on interior set ups that allow us to draw for extended periods of time. Instructor Catherine Bickford will demonstrate how to simplify what you see into basic shapes and planes allowing you to create strong composition. We will investigate what it means to understand your own “mark” and will find new ways to relate to the world through drawing. \nMaterials not included: Please bring an ample supply of vine charcoal and drawing paper or Strathmore Bristol smooth pad (preferred). Students will learn fundamental making and decorating techniques including wheel throwing\, handbuilding and glazing\, as well as sculpting techniques such as coil building\, pinching and handbuilding to create functional and non-functional work. Weekly projects include making cups\, bowls\, and plates. Electric kiln-firing will be available and each person will be working at his or her own level with the guidance of the instructor. \nNon-members: $250 for 6 weeks. Members: $200. \nFee does not include materials. Each class will introduce tools and techniques to include hammering\, soldering\, and riveting\, as well as ways to shape and texture metal. Class projects include a hammered cuff\, fold-formed leaves and simple soldered rings as well as samples to inspire individual creativity and ways to customize projects. This series will also include important information on tool & equipment safety. A class overview can be emailed upon request \nFee does not include materials. The required $20 materials supply kit can be purchased directly from the instructor.
